Pure DC Installs 75 MVA Unit at London Site

Pure DC has placed a 75 MVA transformer at its 90 MW London facility, pushing total substation capacity to 150 MVA ahead of energisation in 2026.

Pure Data Centres Group has delivered the final power transformer to its flagship LON campus in North London. The arrival of the 75 MVA unit completes the primary plant layout for the on-site substation, lifting total installed transformation capacity to 150 MVA. The high-voltage installation has been designed to serve intensive computational infrastructure across the campus, which is configured for an ultimate IT and cooling envelope of 90 MW. Although the physical delivery and rigging onto the plinth are now complete, commercial energisation remains scheduled for 2026.

The considerable time lag between delivery and planned energisation highlights the structural tensions facing heavy power consumers in metropolitan load centres. Rapid expansion of cloud infrastructure and computing clusters has triggered an unprecedented surge in connection applications across transmission and distribution interfaces. In major urban corridors, developers routinely secure transformers years ahead of live grid coupling to de-risk equipment supply chains, even while upstream network reinforcements crawl forward. Securing long-lead primary assets early shields capital programmes from factory bottlenecks, but leaving unenergised units standing on site creates distinct asset management risks, including prolonged preservation requirements for insulating fluid, bushings, and on-load tap changers.

Large multi-transformer campuses also require meticulous operational coordination to balance fault levels against redundancy obligations. Splitting a 150 MVA substation capacity across multiple units provides critical flexibility for maintenance outages and allows staged expansion alongside computing demand. However, managing high-voltage assets in dense industrial environments demands rigorous vigilance over thermal loading, acoustic emissions, and containment systems.

What this means for asset owners in the UK and Ireland: In the UK, extended gap periods between equipment delivery and network energisation create severe preservation challenges for high-voltage plant. Operators facing connection queues stretching towards 2026 must implement systematic oil sampling, active nitrogen blanket monitoring, and regular bushing insulation checks to prevent moisture ingress and dielectric degradation during extended de-energised storage on site.
