01What we do to the oil

Oil treatment

Processing carried out on site, with the transformer in place.

Scope

Vacuum purification, dehydration and degassing · hot-oil circulation · regeneration through Fuller's earth, removing acids and sludge rather than only particulates · full oil change and retrofill · retrofill to natural or synthetic ester · compliant used-oil disposal with chain-of-custody documentation.

Work executed and reported against

IEC 60422IEC 60814IEC 62021-1IEC 60156IEC 62535

02What we measure in the oil

Oil analysis

Sampling to IEC 60567. Condition limits assessed against IEC 60422 and IEEE C57.106.

Tests performed, with the standard each is executed to
TestStandardsWhat it tells you
01Dissolved gas analysisIEC 60567ASTM D3612Fault gases indicate what is happening inside the tank — partial discharge, arcing or overheating each produce a different gas signature.
02Dielectric breakdown voltageIEC 60156ASTM D1816The oil's ability to withstand voltage. Falls sharply with moisture and particulate contamination.
03Acidity / neutralisation numberIEC 62021-1ASTM D664Oxidation state. Rising acidity attacks paper insulation and precipitates sludge onto cooling surfaces.
04Water contentIEC 60814ASTM D1533Moisture in oil migrates into paper, where it is far harder to remove and does far more damage.
05Dissipation factor (tan δ)IEC 60247ASTM D924Dielectric losses. A sensitive early indicator of contamination and ageing before breakdown voltage moves.
06ResistivityIEC 60247Insulating quality of the fluid. Falls with ionic contamination.
07Power factorIEC 60247Companion measurement to tan δ, reported where a client's records use it.
08Interfacial tensionASTM D971Detects polar decay products early — often before acidity has moved meaningfully.
09Corrosive sulphurIEC 62535ASTM D1275Corrosive sulphur attacks copper conductors and can deposit conductive copper sulphide in the insulation.
10Oxidation inhibitor contentIEC 60666ASTM D2668Remaining oxidation inhibitor. Once depleted, ageing accelerates sharply.
11Pour pointISO 3016ASTM D97ASTM D5950Low-temperature behaviour, relevant to cold-start and high-altitude sites.

  1. 01Dissolved gas analysis

    IEC 60567ASTM D3612

Fault gases indicate what is happening inside the tank — partial discharge, arcing or overheating each produce a different gas signature.

  2. 02Dielectric breakdown voltage

    IEC 60156ASTM D1816

The oil's ability to withstand voltage. Falls sharply with moisture and particulate contamination.

  3. 03Acidity / neutralisation number

    IEC 62021-1ASTM D664

Oxidation state. Rising acidity attacks paper insulation and precipitates sludge onto cooling surfaces.

  4. 04Water content

    IEC 60814ASTM D1533

Moisture in oil migrates into paper, where it is far harder to remove and does far more damage.

  5. 05Dissipation factor (tan δ)

    IEC 60247ASTM D924

Dielectric losses. A sensitive early indicator of contamination and ageing before breakdown voltage moves.

  6. 06Resistivity

    IEC 60247

Insulating quality of the fluid. Falls with ionic contamination.

  7. 07Power factor

    IEC 60247

Companion measurement to tan δ, reported where a client's records use it.

  8. 08Interfacial tension

    ASTM D971

Detects polar decay products early — often before acidity has moved meaningfully.

  9. 09Corrosive sulphur

    IEC 62535ASTM D1275

Corrosive sulphur attacks copper conductors and can deposit conductive copper sulphide in the insulation.

  10. 10Oxidation inhibitor content

    IEC 60666ASTM D2668

Remaining oxidation inhibitor. Once depleted, ageing accelerates sharply.

  11. 11Pour point

    ISO 3016ASTM D97ASTM D5950

Low-temperature behaviour, relevant to cold-start and high-altitude sites.

  12. 12Aniline point

    ASTM D611ISO 2977

Aromatic content, which affects the oil's compatibility with gaskets and seals.

  13. 13Density

    ASTM D1298

Baseline property; also identifies mixing of incompatible oils.

  14. 14Viscosity

    ISO 3104ASTM D445

Affects convective cooling. A rise indicates oxidation.

  15. 15Colour

03What we test and repair

Diagnostics and site work

A laptop showing frequency-response traces, set on the open case of a test instrument on a transformer cover, with test leads running to the bushings
Sweep frequency response analysis run from the transformer cover, the traces on the laptop.

Electrical diagnostics

Performed on site, with results interpreted against the asset's own history where records exist.

Winding resistance · turns ratio (TTR), vector group and polarity · insulation resistance and polarisation index · tan delta and power factor of windings and bushings · sweep frequency response analysis (SFRA) to IEC 60076-18 · excitation current · short-circuit impedance · dielectric frequency response · partial discharge to IEC 60270, including acoustic and UHF methods · core insulation testing · thermography under load.

Two wound limbs of a transformer active part with their clamping structure and copper leads, standing on plastic sheeting outdoors, a tap-changer cylinder at the right
Windings, clamping and leads on an active part out of its tank.

Mechanical work

The work that determines whether a rehabilitation holds.

Bushing replacement in OIP, RIP and RIS types · Buchholz, pressure relief and rapid pressure rise device testing · winding and oil temperature indicator calibration · conservator and air-cell renewal · breather service and dehydrating breather retrofit · leak detection and sealing · gasket and radiator renewal · cooling fans, pumps and controls · tank cleaning and internal inspection · corrosion protection.

Tap changers

All work to IEC 60214.

On-load tap changer inspection, service and overhaul · contact and transition resistor assessment · diverter compartment oil treatment · dynamic resistance measurement · motor drive service · de-energised tap changer (DETC) service.

Drying

Moisture in paper is what limits the life of a transformer, and it is the hardest thing to remove.

On-site vacuum drying · hot-oil spray · low frequency heating (LFH), with documented before-and-after moisture assessment so the improvement is evidenced rather than asserted.

Monitoring and retrofit

Extending the useful life or the capacity of an asset already in service.

On-line DGA and bushing monitors · temperature and moisture sensors · SCADA integration · cooling upgrades for uprating · tap changer replacement · protection retrofits.

Send us the test results

If you have DGA results, oil analysis or SFRA traces you want a second opinion on, send them. We will tell you what we read from them before any commercial conversation.
