New Polish Transformer Plant Expands 220 kV Capacity in Europe

A 35.6 million dollar plant investment in Poland boosts supply of transformers up to 160 MVA and 220 kV for European grid and data centre projects.

Manufacturing capacity for high-voltage power equipment in Central Europe has received a boost following the completion of a major facility in Poland. Operating since October and officially inaugurated on November 3, the site expands production for power transformers rated up to 160 MVA and 220 kV. The capital investment of 35.6 million dollars (29 million Swiss francs) directly addresses severe supply constraints facing electrical infrastructure projects across the continent.

Easing supply chain pressure

Lead times for primary substation equipment across Europe have stretched significantly over recent years. The unprecedented surge in grid connection requests for battery energy storage systems, large solar developments, rail infrastructure, and data centres has saturated existing manufacturing allocations. Units operating at 220 kV voltage levels with ratings around 160 MVA perform critical roles in sub-transmission networks, step-up collector substations, and major industrial supply points.

Adding dedicated production slots within the European single market shortens transport logistics and reduces delivery schedule uncertainty. The plant's commercial model targets high-throughput output, with financial payback anticipated within 18 months. This operational target reflects the sustained high demand for medium-power and high-voltage units. For utility operators, independent power producers, and engineering contractors, localised assembly provides improved schedule confidence compared to overseas procurement, which remains exposed to maritime logistics disruptions and geopolitical trade friction.

Furthermore, additional regional assembly capacity strengthens competition among primary equipment suppliers. Asset management teams facing long replacement lead times for aging network transformers gain additional options when planning asset renewals or system expansions.

What this means for asset owners in Europe: Procurement teams and project engineering managers executing grid connections or substation renewals in Poland and the surrounding region gain access to additional factory capacity for equipment rated up to 160 MVA and 220 kV. This additional regional manufacturing volume offers asset owners improved delivery lead times and reduced schedule risks when deploying critical grid-connection assets, battery storage facilities, and heavy industrial power systems.
