Muuntajakannat pysyvät käytössä, vaikka uusiin on vuosien odotus

Transformer life extension

01The situation

A failing transformer usually presents three bad options

Units running past their design life, chronic overloading, cycling from renewable in-feed, heat, dust and coastal salt all accelerate ageing. Then the choices narrow.

  1. 01

    Replace it

US figures put the average lead time for a new power transformer at around 128 weeks, with specialised orders extending to four years. It is one order book, and buyers in every market queue in it on the same terms — then add freight, inland transport and customs.

  2. 02

Ship it out for workshop repair

Months out of service, and freight costs that on a remote site can approach the value of the asset itself.

  3. 03

    Run it to failure

The real incumbent in many fleets. It is a decision, even when nobody makes it deliberately, and it is usually the most expensive one.

02How we are bought

Programmes, not line items

Utilities, industrial operators, IPPs and development-finance programmes buy a defined programme with an outcome. Condition assessment is the natural first step: low commitment, high insight, and it defines everything after it.

  1. A laptop showing frequency-response traces, set on the open case of a test instrument on a transformer cover, with test leads running to the bushings
    01Start here

    Fleet condition assessment

A structured survey of your transformer population that produces a ranked, evidence-based picture of asset health and a prioritised intervention plan.

    Work executed and reported against

    IEC 60567IEC 60599IEEE C57.104+3
  2. A transformer active part hanging from a crane hook above its open tank against a deep blue sky, with two fitters at the tank edge
    02

    Rehabilitation and life extension

Refurbishing a degraded transformer and returning it to reliable service instead of replacing it — weeks instead of years, at a fraction of replacement cost.

    Work executed and reported against

    IEC 60214-1IEC 60422IEC 60296
  3. Two technicians connecting hoses between a large black oil storage bladder and a treatment plant under a plastic sheet, beside a power transformer, the work area taped off
    03

    Oil management programmes

Ongoing custody of transformer oil condition across a site or fleet. A single oil test is data; a trend is a decision.

    Work executed and reported against

    IEC 60422IEC 60814IEC 62021-1+2
  4. A transformer active part suspended above its tank in an outdoor switchyard, fitters working on top of the tank and a red mobile crane alongside
    04

    Installation and commissioning

New assets from delivery to energisation, with the test evidence a lender or an asset owner reviews before accepting the asset.

  5. Looking up at high-voltage disconnectors and tall ribbed insulator columns on lattice steel gantries, with a technician working from a mobile elevating work platform against a blue sky
    05

    Substation and network services

Primary and secondary equipment across the substation, not only the transformer.

  6. A fire-damaged transformer with a scorched, blackened tank and burnt fittings on its cover, standing outside a brick building, with a cable drum and coiled cable beside it
    06

    Emergency and failure recovery

Mobilised breakdown response to remote sites, and the forensic work that establishes what actually happened.

    Work executed and reported against

    IEC 60076-18
  7. 07

    Training and capacity building

Capability that stays behind after demobilisation. Frequently a contractual requirement where a development bank funds the work.

  8. A large power transformer in a concrete pit, with three high-voltage bushings above a bank of fan-cooled oil coolers and two technicians in hi-vis vests working on the tank cover
    08

    Maintenance contracts and O&M

Multi-year scheduled maintenance across a site or network, with the records and trending an asset manager can report from.

Guidance, not a diagnosis. What a result means depends on the unit's history, loading and other readings, and only an engineer who has seen all of them can say.

05Remote and cross-border sites

Reach is part of the scope

For a remote or cross-border site, the programme also carries shipping, temporary import, customs, permits, abnormal-load transport, site generation, fuel and water planning, satellite communications, and a contingency for the part that does not clear customs. It is planned before the technical work, because it decides whether the technical work happens.

Mobilisation — eight stages, enquiry to demobilisation

  1. Enquiry

Assets, site, symptoms and constraints. Enough to say honestly whether we are the right supplier.

  2. 02

    Site survey

Access, condition and scope confirmed on the ground before a price is fixed.

  3. 03

    Mobilisation plan

Equipment list, shipping route, clearance path, permits, team and dates.

  4. 04

    Shipping and clearance

Consignment moves under temporary import, with clearance tracked to a date.

  5. 05

    Team deployment

Technicians travel once the plant has cleared, not before.

  6. 06

    On-site works

The scope executed against the agreed method statements and safety regime.

  7. 07

    Testing and handover

Post-intervention test evidence, compared against the pre-intervention baseline.

  8. 08

    Demobilisation

Plant re-exported, site left clean, used oil removed under a documented chain of custody.

07Who we work for

Sectors

The asset is similar; the consequence of losing it is not.

10 sectorsShow allHide
  • Transmission and distribution utilities

Ageing fleets and reliability targets, with the work funded through a regulated investment plan or a development-bank rehabilitation programme. Either way, each intervention has to be justified with condition evidence.

  • Manufacturing and heavy industry

Cement, steel, textiles, food processing and chemicals — continuous processes where an unplanned transformer outage stops the line.

  • Independent power producers

Contractual availability obligations, and lenders who require documented, auditable asset management. Test evidence is a reporting deliverable, not a nicety.

  • Oil, gas and petrochemicals

Onshore and offshore, hazardous area discipline, and a consequence of failure measured in more than lost production.

  • Renewables and storage

Solar plants, wind farms, battery storage and collector substations, frequently remote and frequently commissioned to a fixed grid-connection date.

  • Mining and metals

Remote sites, heavy and harsh duty, and an extremely high cost of downtime. Often self-generating, which makes the transformer a single point of failure for the whole operation.

  • EPC contractors

Installation and commissioning packages inside a larger project, where the only thing that matters is mobilising on the date agreed.

  • Critical infrastructure

Hospitals, airports, water utilities and ports, where the tolerance for an unplanned outage is effectively zero.

  • Telecoms and data infrastructure

Distributed power assets whose reliability underpins service availability across a whole network.

  • Rural electrification and mini-grids

Distribution transformer fleets spread across long distances, usually under development-finance programmes with their own procurement rules and reporting.

Start with a condition assessment

Tell us the assets, the site and the situation. If the fleet's condition is unknown, an assessment is the lowest-commitment way to find out what you actually have — and it defines whatever comes next.
