Tackling connection bottlenecks

Industrial decarbonisation and port electrification across coastal industrial hubs face severe grid connection delays. Traditional network expansion requires lengthy reinforcement works, including circuit upgrades and primary substation transformer replacements. To overcome these constraints, network operators are exploring operational mechanisms that maximize existing assets.

A new collaborative initiative brings together network operating authority National Grid with regional industrial and freeport organisations. The initial focus centres on deploying energy storage assets controlled directly by the network operator. By dynamically managing local supply and demand, the operator seeks to create immediate headroom on transmission and distribution corridors without waiting for heavy infrastructure buildouts.

Operational implications for substation infrastructure

For high-voltage engineering teams, shifting from passive network capacity to operator-controlled battery storage alters substation load profiles and fault dynamics. Placing utility-managed storage at strategic nodes allows peak thermal loading on power transformers to be shaved during heavy demand periods or high renewable feed-in.

However, incorporating network-controlled storage directly into grid operations introduces operational challenges for primary substation equipment. Bi-directional power flows increase switching cycles on circuit breakers and tap changers, accelerating physical wear on switchgear and online tap changer contacts. In addition, protection schemes at primary substations must accommodate variable short-circuit contributions from inverter-based storage devices, requiring updated relay settings and refined control logic to prevent unwanted tripping during grid disturbances.

What this means for asset owners in the UK and Ireland: Engineers and asset managers operating high-voltage substations in the United Kingdom face evolving duty cycles as utility-managed storage devices alter local network dynamics. To prevent premature thermal degradation and switchgear wear, asset owners should review transformer dissolved gas analysis sampling frequencies and re-evaluate protection relay co-ordination settings at connection points serving industrial complexes.

Започнете с оценка на състоянието

Опишете съоръженията, обекта и ситуацията. Ако състоянието на парка е неизвестно, оценката е начинът с най-малък ангажимент да разберете какво всъщност имате — и тя определя всичко, което следва.
