Transelectrica launches 105.4 million USD Alba Iulia digital substation upgrade

Transelectrica has initiated a major overhaul of the Alba Iulia substation, transforming the facility operating at 220, 110, and 20 kV voltage levels into a modern digital node. Supported by 50.6 million USD (228.5 million RON) from the EU Modernization Fund out of a total project cost of 105.4 million USD (476.1 million RON), the project underlines how grant funding is driving transmission modernization across Eastern Europe. The complete execution period spans 44 months, targeting delivery before May 2030.

Upgrading legacy primary switchgear and secondary automation to full digital standards improves operational visibility and fault diagnostic speed. Digital substations replace traditional copper control cabling with fibre-optic bus systems, reducing physical footprints and minimizing signal interference. For transmission system operators, digitizing key multi-voltage nodes provides real-time data integration, essential for handling dynamic power flows associated with incoming renewable generation.

The financial structure demonstrates the key role of non-repayable EU funds in co-financing critical grid enhancements. Securing non-repayable capital offsets balance sheet strain for grid operators executing capital expenditure programmes, while enabling essential assets to meet modern automation requirements.
