Sarajevo 12 Substation Online to Reinforce Bosnia 110 kV Grid

Elektroprijenos BiH has commissioned the Sarajevo 12 110 kV substation, deploying 40 MVA transformers to relieve Sarajevo 7 and Sarajevo 13 nodes.

The commissioning of the Sarajevo 12 substation marks a targeted operational reinforcement for the 110 kV regional grid in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built with an investment of BAM 10.5 million (approximately $6.0 million), the new facility introduces two 40 MVA power transformers to serve expanding municipal demand in Novo Sarajevo while forming crucial interconnecting ties with existing nodes at Sarajevo 7 and Sarajevo 13.

For transmission and distribution engineers, network expansion at this voltage level addresses critical thermal and operational constraints. Operating high-voltage transformers near their continuous rated capacity elevates winding temperatures, accelerating cellulose insulation aging and increasing the likelihood of dielectric breakdown. By inserting Sarajevo 12 into the local 110 kV network, grid operators can split incoming load circuits and relieve historical overload conditions on older transformers at neighbouring substations.

Redistributing load across additional 40 MVA units improves system reliability during peak urban demand cycles and creates operational headroom. When transformers run at lower thermal ratios, dissolved gas generation decreases, reducing forced outage risks associated with thermal faulting in mineral oil insulation. Furthermore, establishing dual-transformer configurations provides contingency redundancy, giving maintenance teams predictable windows to execute offline routine testing, bushing inspections, and tap-changer servicing without curtailing customer supply.

What this means for asset owners in the Balkans and the Black Sea region: Grid operators and asset managers in Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring Balkan power systems face ongoing challenges with aging sub-transmission assets under rising urban demand. Integrating new 110 kV substations like Sarajevo 12 creates critical maintenance windows, enabling engineers to remove adjacent transformers from service for condition monitoring and oil diagnostics without risking localized load shedding or transformer overloading during peak demand periods.

Fortell oss om anleggene, stedet og situasjonen. Hvis tilstanden på parken er ukjent, er en vurdering den minst forpliktende måten å finne ut hva dere faktisk har — og den definerer det som kommer etterpå.
