Zambia Generation Capacity Reaches 4722MW as Grid Infrastructure Lags

Zambia has expanded installed generation to 4722.3 megawatts, but transmission bottlenecks hinder delivery against a 2400 megawatt peak demand.

Zambia has expanded its installed electricity generation capacity to 4722.3 megawatts, up from 3777 megawatts in 2024. This capacity significantly exceeds the peak national demand, which stands around 2400 megawatts. However, executive warnings highlight that the transmission and distribution network required to move this power to end consumers is lagging behind schedule.

A severe imbalance between generation availability and grid transfer capability creates operational risk for network operators, industrial consumers, and mining complexes. Even with ample generation, weak transmission corridors lead to localized curtailment, voltage instability, and severe transformer strain during peak loading periods. For substation engineers, excessive headroom in generation coupled with congested lines means step-up transformers at generation nodes operate under fluctuating duty cycles, while step-down substations near demand centres face supply shortfalls and thermal overloading on legacy assets.

Additionally, the inability of the grid to evacuate power efficiently delays the payback period for independent power producers and complicates future project commissioning. Without rapid capital allocation into primary substations, high-voltage lines, and reactive power compensation, newly installed power plant assets remain stranded, worsening load shedding despite nominal capacity surpluses.

What this means for asset owners in Africa: In Zambia, substation operators and industrial engineering staff must prepare for heightened switchgear stress and thermal cycles on transformer fleets due to transmission bottlenecks. Operating near heavily congested corridors risks elevated harmonic distortion and voltage fluctuations, making frequent dissolved gas analysis critical to prevent catastrophic insulation failure on primary power transformers.
