Türkiye Unlicensed Renewable Grid Capacity Drops Near Zero

TEİAŞ transmission capacity map shows available headroom for unlicensed solar and wind power dropped from 1.500 MW down to 38.3 MW in Türkiye.

TEİAŞ has updated its regional transmission connection capacity map as of 30 September, revealing a dramatic contraction in available headroom for unlicensed renewable energy projects. Unlicensed solar and wind allocations on the transmission network have plunged from 1.500 MW to a remaining total of just 38.3 MW nationwide.

This severe constraint directly impacts industrial power consumers and energy managers seeking to construct self-consumption generation assets. Unlicensed generation frameworks allow commercial and industrial sites to offset retail electricity tariffs by generating power without entering complex wholesale market structures. With transmission allocations virtually depleted, industrial sites attempting to connect major captive renewable plants directly to transmission-level substations face immediate grid lockouts.

To maintain self-generation plans, industrial developers must pivot away from high-voltage transmission interconnects toward distribution network capacity. This shift places increased operational emphasis on primary distribution substations and transformer capacity within regional distribution system operator networks. Facilities will need to optimize existing step-down transformer assets, install local monitoring, and evaluate battery storage systems to manage reverse power flows and peak export constraints at local connection points.

What this means for asset owners in Türkiye: Industrial plant managers and substation engineers in Türkiye face a tightening window for new grid connections following the depletion of transmission capacity to 38.3 MW from 1.500 MW recorded on 30 September. Commercial facilities planning self-consumption solar or wind installations must immediately review regional distribution transformer loading, step-down switchgear headroom, and local grid connection queues. Long procurement lead times for medium-voltage transformers and switchgear mean that delays in securing distribution-level capacity rights will defer project energisation dates significantly.
